Many, but not all, fabrics from Strawberries Fabrics are woven by hand. The handloom fabrics from the Houey Hong Vocationa Traning Centre have exclusively been dyed with natural colourings. The cotton or silk fabric is woven according to traditional Lao techniques such as ‘ikat’ or supplementary weft’. This last technique is very complicated as it involves adding separate threads at the weft.
All fabrics are locally produced by the students of the centre. The students are also taught how to collect the ingredients for the natural dyes from trees and herbs and how to process these in order to obtain the desired colours. The centre has made a colour chart that shows which herb or fruit gives which colour, for instance jackfruit will make a soft yellow and ebony wood a brown.orange.
