Bogolan fabric, dessin cowry shell
Piece of pure cotton bogolan fabric- originating from the Dogon area in Mali. Produced by traditional bogolaniers (see also bogolan making elewehere this website), this piece features the cowry shell in a handmade pattern. The black colour is made with mud and is relatively colour fast. The pattern is only vaguely recognizable at the backside (one of the characteristics of a true bogolan). The fabric is composed of small strips of cotton. This unfinished piece is ideal for making cushion covers, blankets or sewing other items.
