Bogolan dogon symbol
Bogolan Fabric, made by artisanal bogolan producers in the Dogon Area of Mali. It is made from 100% cotton, which is locally grown, locally spun and locally woven into small strips. The strips are still recognisable in the fabric. The black colour of the fabric is coloured with mud- hence the name mud-cloth. The pattern features the typical Dogon symbol, which is also represented in the traditional masks (see also Bogolan from Mali on this same website for more info).
This piece has already been washed. The colours will gradually fade after more frequent washing. At the same time, the fabric will become increasingly soft.
The size of this piece is 280 cm long and 110 cm wide
(7 bands @15 cm each). The bands are connected with a zig-zag weave (which may
require double checking). The ends of the fabric are unfinished.
